Earlier today, I received an email from GAE regarding that it’s leaving Preview status as well as an accordingly updated pricing model is coming up.
I didn’t really care because I am pretty much inactive on GAE and never really made a good app. But I still checked out my apps, here is one has highest charge on the right.
All my apps are not billed and even I turned billing on, I wouldn’t be charge in old pricing model. I don’t know if new model comes up, my apps will be capped or not if I still not turn on billing, I didn’t read that pricing model and I don’t care. I would just let my app out of service for a while.
However, I don’t think it’s time to have such change, leaving preview. Why, because the recent outage on M/S datastore has proved me that GAE is still a preview. Yes, HRD is not affective, but that doesn’t matter because M/S is still part of GAE. Datastore is very fundamental part, if it can suffer such outage, how could you charge people even they have migrated to HRD? Yes, you have SLA, anything goes wrong, they will get refund or credits, but they would rather be charged and having no outages.
One thing I might be sure is optimization and using Python 2.7 (You need to sign up something, I think) would reduce the cost.
Note
Just read this post, and it has an amazing solution to reduce the cost from new pricing model, Optimizing your AppEngine website for the new pricing: How to get from 422 $ per month back to free in a few lines. Make sure you check it out! If it doesn’t work, i.e. not reducing your cost, well, at least you would have good time. But I am sure that code would work.
