Question: Which country drink most tea per capita?
My answer was China and I’d believe most people would guess that, too, but it’s not China and it’s not even ranked in top 10, well, not even top 25 as of 2009. Big surprise!
I stumbled across a map chart about tea consumption and the winner is Turkey. 6.87 Kg in 2009 and 2.54 Kg more than second place winner, Morocco. Turkish must really love their tea.
Because the data wasn’t clearly citing the source and the data date, so I decided to make my own with data from Wikipedia and charting by Google Docs for tea consumption and coffee consumption1, you can view the spreadsheet.
Top 10 tea drinkers are
Country | Consumption (Kg) |
---|---|
Turkey | 6.87000 |
Morocco | 4.34000 |
Ireland | 3.22000 |
Mauritania | 3.22000 |
United Kingdom | 2.74000 |
Seychelles | 2.08000 |
United Arab Emirates | 1.89000 |
Kuwait | 1.61000 |
Qatar | 1.60000 |
Kazakhstan | 1.54000 |
Turkey is really standing out significantly in the map.
Top 10 coffee drinkers are
Country | Consumption (Kg) |
---|---|
Finland | 12.0 |
Norway | 9.9 |
Iceland | 9.0 |
Denmark | 8.7 |
Netherlands | 8.4 |
Sweden | 8.2 |
Switzerland | 7.9 |
Belgium | 6.8 |
Canada | 6.5 |
Bosnia and Herzegovina | 6.2 |
Europeans love their coffee, especially in north, including Iceland.
I also made a GIF, alternating two maps, so you could see more about the data.
Tea definitely is the globally consumed drink.
Recently, BBC This World series broadcast The Tea Trail and The Coffee Trail with Simon Reeve, who traveled to Vietnam for tea and to East Africa for coffee. Although in the programme it tells that Vietnam is top coffee supplier for instant coffee, there is no data of Vietnam in data source.
Just like spices, there are a lot of stories, sad ones behind tea and coffee.
